Larry Papenfuss, Director of Information Technology, has announced his retirement effective December 25, 2026. Papenfuss began working for SCKLS in March 1998. Information will be forthcoming about his retirement reception planned for the afternoon of Thursday, December 3. Lisa Sharbaugh, who is currently Automation and Technology Coordinator, has been appointed director of information technology effective upon Papenfuss' retirement.
In his 29 years of service to member libraries, Papenfuss was instrumental in the process of acquiring and relocating SCKLS to its current location at 321 North Main Street, South Hutchinson as well as coordinating multiple upgrades to the building. He initiated and administered Project Automate and the South Central Kansas Library Automation Network (SCKAN) which enabled 23 small public libraries to establish or migrate to a shared, modern catalog and circulation system.
When member small public libraries voted to dissolve SCKAN, his leadership facilitated their transition to alternative functional and affordable library automation systems. Over the years, he has regularly planned and implemented numerous technology upgrades at member small public libraries. Along with other technology service initiatives, he was responsible for creating an annual Network Services Grant that strengthens and maintains the computer network security for 31 member public libraries.
Along with providing his own excellent technology service to member public libraries, Papenfuss has also trained and guided a team of six technology specialists whose work supports computers, printers, internal networking, websites and other technologies offered by small public libraries in the 12 county SCKLS area.
