Mock Newbery and Caldecott Discussion

Friday, December 11, 2009

Haysville Community Library

210 South Hays

Haysville, KS 67060

9:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Do you ever wonder how the Newbery and Caldecott committees work?  How do they choose the medal and honor books?  What makes a book a winner?  Wonder no more.  Take part in South Central Kansas Library System’s third annual Mock Newbery and Caldecott Discussion to discover what makes a book an award winner and vote on your choices from 2009.

Help build the Recommended List.  Remember the nominated book must have a copyright of 2009.  Submit your Caldecott choices, which reflect distinguished illustrations in a picture book and excellence of pictorial presentation for children, as well as Newbery choices, where each book should be considered as a contribution to literature based primarily on the text, using the online form.

For further criteria of the awards, visit the American Library Association website:  www.ala.org/alsc then click on Awards and Grants in the left-hand column, next click on Book and Media Awards, next Newbery or Caldecott and then Terms and Criteria.

It is not necessary to read all of the titles, but for discussion, it is best to have read as many as possible.  To begin the reading and discussion the following titles may be under consideration for the Mock Newbery:
